Anthropic Just Bet $200M on One Question About Work

Two hundred million dollars and a one-minute setup: on July 22, 2026, Anthropic put both behind the same question millions of workers keep asking, which is what AI is about to do to their jobs. In a single day the company opened its Anthropic Economic Index to anyone through a Claude connector and detailed a $200 million fund to pay for the field experiments that might tell us what actually works when the disruption arrives. The money and the tool point at the same gap, which is that almost nobody has hard evidence yet.

Ask Claude Which Jobs AI Is Actually Changing

The Anthropic Economic Index measures how AI is being used across the economy, and its data has already been picked up by researchers, journalists, and policymakers. The new connector removes the last barrier to that data, letting anyone query it in plain language inside claude.ai. Anthropic suggests prompts such as “Which occupations use AI the most?”, “What are the most common ways people in Colorado use Claude?”, and “What sorts of tasks do teachers use Claude for?” Each answer is grounded directly in the Index rather than the model’s general knowledge.

Setup takes about a minute

There is nothing to install. In claude.ai you open the connectors menu, find the Anthropic Economic Index in the directory, and enable it. It works in any conversation with any Claude model. Anthropic recommends starting broad (“what does the Index say about my industry?”), then drilling into specifics, and asking Claude to show the underlying data behind any answer. The company is careful to flag the caveat, which is that the Index reflects patterns in Claude usage rather than the labor market as a whole, and Claude will point users back to the source data and its limitations as they explore.

A $200 Million Bet on Questions Nobody Has Answered

The same day, Anthropic published the research agenda for its Economic Futures Research Fund and committed $200 million to it. The pitch is blunt: AI capabilities keep improving, but no one knows how fast AI will diffuse through the economy or what the effects will be, and the existing evidence on workplace AI integration is “observational and short-term.” The fund exists to buy better evidence through large-scale randomized controlled trials and ambitious pilots before the disruption forces decisions.

This is a deliberate escalation of the Economic Futures program Anthropic launched a year earlier. The company says it is shifting toward large grants and ambitious projects because many small grants proved hard to manage at scale and delivered less impact. It plans to fund projects primarily in the $5-30 million range, is flexible upward for well-scoped work, and will not fund anything below $1 million from this pool. Proposals are open to accredited universities, independent research institutes, policy organizations, and nonprofits with a track record of running field experiments at scale, but not to individuals applying in a personal capacity.

The Five Fault Lines Anthropic Wants to Study

The agenda names five priorities. First, shaping AI’s impact on workers at the firm and workplace level, including field experiments that compare AI integration designs built with workers against top-down approaches. Second, equipping people to navigate AI-driven transitions through retraining, job placement, and apprenticeship models for a world where junior tasks get absorbed by AI. Third, modernizing income support, since most unemployment systems assume joblessness is temporary while AI may make displacement broader and more persistent.

From capital accounts to guaranteed jobs

The fourth priority is building worker stakes in AI-driven growth before disruption arrives, including RCTs on “pre-distributive capital accounts,” equity-sharing, and questions about which tax base (corporate profits, capital gains, compute, or automation taxes) would actually fund such transfers. The fifth is generating new evidence on public investments, from large pilots that fund community-facing service jobs to guaranteed-jobs programs “in the spirit of the Civilian Conservation Corps.” The through-line is that Anthropic is openly treating these as scenarios “without historical precedent,” and it says it is willing to fund creative pilots for problems that randomized trials alone might only chip away at.
