- DeepMind spinout Isomorphic Labs closed a $2.1B Series B led by Thrive Capital, the largest AI drug discovery round ever raised in Europe.
- New backers MGX, Temasek, CapitalG and the UK Sovereign AI Fund joined Alphabet and GV — the first time a sovereign wealth coalition has anchored an AI biotech of this size.
- The capital funds IsoDDE, a unified AI drug design engine built on AlphaFold 3, and accelerates Isomorphic’s pipeline with Novartis, Eli Lilly and J&J toward clinical stage.
- For pharma incumbents, the question is no longer if AI will compress preclinical timelines — it is who controls the model that does it.
On May 12, Demis Hassabis quietly closed the largest AI drug discovery round in European history. Isomorphic Labs — the DeepMind biotech spinout the Nobel laureate has been building since 2021 — pulled in $2.1 billion in Series B funding, more than triple its prior raise. Thrive Capital led. Alphabet, GV, MGX, Temasek, CapitalG and the UK Sovereign AI Fund followed. The number alone is striking. What it signals about the next decade of pharma is more so.
The Deal Behind the Number
$2.1B, A New European Biotech Record
Isomorphic last raised $600 million in early 2025. This round is 3.5x that, and arrives less than 12 months later. Thrive Capital — Joshua Kushner’s firm that also just co-led Anduril’s $5B round at $61B valuation — took the lead. The supporting cast tells the real story: MGX from Abu Dhabi, Singapore’s Temasek, Alphabet’s CapitalG and GV, and the UK’s Sovereign AI Fund. This is not standard venture syndication. It is a sovereign-and-strategic capital stack built to outlast typical fund cycles.
Why Sovereign Funds Showed Up
Sovereign wealth funds rarely lead biotech rounds. They are here because AI drug discovery has stopped looking like a science project and started looking like national infrastructure. The UK’s participation is the loudest tell: London-headquartered Isomorphic is being treated as a strategic asset, not a portfolio bet. For MGX and Temasek, the calculation is similar — secure equity in the platform that may decide who manufactures the next generation of medicines.
Business Insight — When sovereign funds and Alphabet co-anchor a single biotech round, the company is no longer being valued as a startup. It is being valued as critical infrastructure for an entire industry vertical. That repricing is what justifies the 3.5x step-up.
IsoDDE — The Engine the Money Is Buying
One Platform, Every Drug Modality
The capital flows into IsoDDE — Isomorphic Drug Design Engine — a unified stack of foundational models that includes AlphaFold 3. Where most AI biotechs vertical-stack around one disease or one modality, Isomorphic is building a horizontal platform: small molecules, antibodies, and beyond, across multiple therapeutic areas in parallel. The bet is that compute-and-model leverage compounds faster than disease specialization.
Already Booked: Novartis, Lilly, J&J
Three of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies have already signed Isomorphic as their AI drug-design partner. Eli Lilly and Novartis tasked the company with using AlphaFold to discover small molecules for undisclosed targets. Johnson & Johnson joined as the most recent strategic partner. For Isomorphic, these deals do two things: validate the platform commercially, and provide a real-world feedback loop that pure tech competitors cannot replicate.
Business Insight — Pharma partnerships are the moat. Recursion and Exscientia have models. Isomorphic has models plus Lilly, Novartis and J&J data flowing through them. The training signal advantage compounds with every program.
What This Means for Pharma
The Make-or-Buy Decision Just Got Harder
For incumbent pharma, the calculus is shifting. Building an in-house AI drug design platform now requires competing with a $2.1B-funded, Alphabet-backed, Nobel-laureate-led team that has 5+ years head start and exclusive deals with the leading sovereign AI funds. Buying access via partnership — the path Lilly, Novartis and J&J chose — looks increasingly like the only rational option for everyone outside the top three.
Clinical Pipeline Is the Next Catalyst
Isomorphic confirmed the round will accelerate its own drug candidates into clinical trials. The platform has been computational and partnership-driven; the next chapter is wet-lab and regulatory. The first Isomorphic-originated molecule entering Phase 1 will be the moment the AI-drug-discovery thesis is either validated or stress-tested in front of the FDA. Investors at this valuation are pricing in the former.
Business Insight — The valuation gap between AI biotech leaders and pure software AI is closing fast. With $2.1B in the bank and pharma majors as paying customers, Isomorphic could be Europe’s most valuable AI company within 24 months — and a likely IPO candidate by 2027.
